Tradition tells us that around the end of the 5th century, right here, in one of the many natural caves that dot the territory, appeared Saint Michael the archangel. This marked
the holy fate of this place , which had already become during the Lombardy era , an
important stop on the Via Sacra Micaelica, the medieval religious journey from Mount Saint Michael that led the faithful to the holy land. The sanctuary, considered to be the oldest place of Saint Michael worship in the West, was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2011.
