Discover the oldest maritime tradition of the Gargano. The coastline between Peschici and Vieste is one of the most picturesque in the Mediterranean. Here, for over a century, trabucchi—fishing spider-like structures born from the ingenuity of local fishermen—have been anchored to the rocks.
The proposed trekking route is located in the Peschici area and includes visits to the trabucchi of Mimì at Punta San Nicola and Punta Manaccora. The itinerary also highlights the natural aspect, with the presence of Mediterranean scrub along the path.

This highly valuable naturalistic loop trail crosses almost all the vegetation types of the Umbra Forest. Along the path, you will encounter ancient beeches, maples, hornbeams (both white and black), strawberry trees, larches, and black pines, featuring spectacular examples of arboreal and shrubby macrosomatism, such as with holly. Macrosomatism is the tendency of certain plants to develop exceptionally large sizes compared to the norm, creating unique and captivating landscapes.
It is recommended to hike this trail in autumn and spring, when the forest is painted in warm hues before shedding its leaves or is dressed in a fresh new leafy coat. The entire route is on dirt paths and requires good physical fitness.

In spring, Gargano offers its visitors the chance to admire splendid wildflowers, including orchids—true masters of the art of seduction. The area of Mattinata, in particular, boasts an extraordinary variety of these fascinating plants.
The route begins with the discovery of the colors and scents of the orchids, rare and ephemeral flowers, just like all the most beautiful things. Toward the end of the itinerary, we will reach a place rich in history: the ruins of the Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity. Here, among the ancient remnants of the monastery, you will be enveloped by the charm and mystery of a site now reclaimed by nature.
Before you will stretch a landscape of rare beauty, immersed in pristine nature, where time seems suspended and the frenzy of modern life gives way to the peace and wonder of the place.

The loop trail starts and ends at the Caritate Forestry Station, once used for forest ranger patrols.
The route winds through the Gargano oak forest, a transition area between the coastal Mediterranean scrub and the beech woods of the Umbra Forest. In the Petassa oak forest, ancient Aleppo pines survive—remnants of the pine forests that once covered Gargano. Along the way, you’ll come across ancient pools, artificial basins used to collect rainwater and water livestock. The presence of coppice woods, harvested on a rotational basis, tells the long history of human interaction with the land.

The trail takes place along the border area between Peschici and Vieste, characterized by the scents of Mediterranean scrub and Aleppo pines.
Starting from the bay of Sfinale, a picturesque inlet bordered on the left by a square-shaped tower known as the “Sfinale Tower,” the path continues into the pine forest, where you’ll find intertwined growths of mastic, rosemary, capers, and myrtle.
Along the way, there will be a stop at “Riparo Sfinalicchio,” undoubtedly the finest and most complex example of scratched and engraved rock art currently known in southern Italy.
At the end of the route, you will visit a local farm for a picnic featuring typical regional products.
